This role is primarily an IT infrastructure technical design role.  The main objective of the role is to design and document technology solutions for Company X or customer requirements (usually in the context of a project or initiative) using existing technology components and capabilities in the Company X environment.  The Solution Architect must work within the bounds and constraints defined by the Company X Architecture team, and within the bounds and constraints of the requirements of the project or initiative.

This role reports to the Solution Development Manager to ensure that this branch of the organisation has sufficient technical capability to construct appropriate technology solutions.  However it uses the outputs of the Company X Architecture team (standards, components, frameworks, policies, patterns etc for current and target state) to construct solutions.

This role is differentiated from the Technology Architect role in that it does not create solutions using new technology or new capability, and does not have a focus on future state architecture.

This role is a senior technical role within the Solution Development branch in which the incumbent is expected to competently work across many areas of technology rather than having a specific technology specialisation.  However, the incumbent must regularly work closely with other technology specialists to construct and validate solutions.

Does not:

  • Define target state architecture or new capability for either Company X or customer projects
  • Has no technology decision rights
